Ataxic Cerebral Palsy By Dr. J. K. Jain

Ataxic cerebral palsy occurs because of the lesion in the cerebellum. The child has a very shaky & unstable gait. These children need intensive therapy to improve balance, pelvic control & posture. Sometimes they also need a Brace & walking aid. Rarely do they need surgery to correct associated contracture.

The cerebellar lesion causes lots of imbalance & problems of position sense in children. Most of it occurs because of genetic problems, but can also occur due to perinatal injury before, or after delivery. If it occurred because of a genetic cause then other siblings in the family can also be affected by the issue of balance. There is no medical treatment for the cerebellar problem. These children need good rehab problems and training in vestibular control. Rarely may they develop a deformity in the limb then orthopedic surgery is required to correct that. With goof balancing therapy & brace their capability of ambulation can be maintained for a long duration. All this planning needs a complete understanding of the problem and treatment mode by the parents.
