Cerebral Palsy Birth Injury
Cerebral palsy is a group of neuromotor disorders which occurs due to insult to immature brain. Cerebral palsy brain injury can occur inside uterus of mother, at the time of delivery and up-to 2 years of life. Most of the time, we believe that cerebral palsy is a birth injury but it is not totally right. In developing countries, commonest cause is poor antenatal care of mother & improper care during delivery. But with improvement in medical care in developing countries and developed countries, most of the time etiology still remains unknown. The etiology of cerebral palsy (CP) is very diverse and multi-factorial. The cerebral palsy causes are congenital, genetic, inflammatory, infectious, anoxic, traumatic and metabolic. The injury to the developing brain may be prenatal, natal or postnatal. Brain malformation in developing fetus can also be one of the causes of cerebral palsy. Brain insult in cerebral palsy is static. As much as 75% – 80% of the cases are due to prenatal injury with less than 10% being due to significant birth trauma or asphyxia. Chances of brain insult (brain injury) are high in premature (< 28week) and very low birth weight (<1.5kg) newborn baby. Cerebral palsy Birth injury to the brain can occur because of asphyxia, trauma, infection, hyper-bilirubinemia, meconium aspiration etc.
